The Vilarnau winery, close to the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, specializes in artisanal production of high quality cavas, and shares its innovative, creative and dynamic character with Spain’s most avant-garde city.
The Vilarnau cavas date from 1949 and were originally located in the town center of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia, the heart of Cava. Vilarnau has been part of the González Byass group since 1982. The vineyards where the winery is currently located were bought in 1990 and the state of the art winery was inaugurated in 2005. The Vilarnau estate is situated 6km outside of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia in the highest point of the area Espiells, 200m above sea level. High altitudes contribute to a slower maturation of the grape, which produces wines with higher acidity contributing to a more balanced ageing.
The name comes from the old fortified house owned by the Vila Arnau family which can be found on the banks of the river Anoia near where the vineyards can be found today
The Vilarnau team is focused on the quality of the base wine, which is central to the quality of the cavas produced, therefore the entire process is managed, starting in the vineyard. The estate includes 20 hectares of planted vineyards and the winery manages over 100 hectares on long term contracts. Precision viticulture is applied in all vineyards in which every vine is treated individually to achieve an optimum balance of leaves, bunches and water.
Vilarnau works with both international and native varieties, being the first winery to plant Pinot Noir in the region. However they maintain a focus on authenticity, using local varieties such as Trepat and Subirat Parent, and have revived traditional techniques in the winemaking process such as ageing in chestnut wood and fermentation in clay pots.
